it can be played online as well as on LAN. That's the whole idea of the mod to co-op with other players. In most of the maps you start in a room with two buttons you need to press on the same time to exit. So the mission cannot be started without at least 2 players being present. As far as i Know there isnt any bot co-op player you can engage with.
so you can play with more than 2 players?
is there a limit? 8 or 16?

i guess only lan is an option for me, because i tried to add my cd-key on steam to get it to steam, seems some one else has my cd-key, so i can't get it to steam unless i pay for it... again.
going online with the old version won't find any other players, most of them have the steam shit version.

added: playstation's version had decay co-op mod, with singleplayer bot to play the mod, very funny & annoying at once because the bot wasn't too smart. :P

did you know gta chinatown wars comes to psp this fall?

What's the difference between the steam and CD version? The minimum of players is 2-16 I believe.

steam version is also a newer version compared to the cd version. (bit weird, but it is)
this meaning that you don't have the propper protocal version, and stay behind.
to fully update to the latest version, you need the steam version.
this was years ago, 2004 already, the year i coudn't play hl1 online no more, at the time i didn't understand steam shit, and there was no newer update downloadable, everywhere saying it was the lates update for hl1, it wasn't.
pretty confusing i know, but it's simple, blame valve!

I believe its v1.5 vs v1.6. v.1.5 being the CD version. I can only remember it for the the unique login screen.

i don't recall, but the protocal version was something like 46 vs 47 or something.

1.5 looks like this:

and the 1.6 steam version:

Which is odd though, because now that i look at the first image it says "v.1.6" there, too.

I told you, it's the protocal version they changed.
I see V40, steam must be V41 then. (don't really recall)

Anyway, it wouldn't have been a problem if your Half-life serial hadn't already been in use. Thankfully a new Half-life serial isn't the most expensive thing in the world. Though, it's a waste of money for a product you already own. Did you have any luck installing sven co-op on the CD-version?

well, as i figure out, i can't use it for online connections because of the non steamy shit.
and there'se no instant bot feature, which leads to the conclusion i can't use it even if it did work.
it's useless on an old cd version unless you have plenty people around you to play it on a lan.
i just can't devide myself into multiple people, and if i could, i still might find it a useless way to play the game. :P
besides, currently i have plenty other stuff to do.

(btw, did you know about the gta chinatown wars coming to the psp this fall???)

Well, yes it is a "Co-op" game. Playing it just by yourself is against the entire concept and you might as well play the single player game.
and no, I'd forgotten all about GTA. I'm not sure if I am gonna spend money on it if they're adapting the idea of periodic expansions such as the team at Valve are doing at the moment. I'd rather wait the 8-16 years they said it would take to develop a whole new game engine and just let them blow my mind again as they did with Half-life and Half-life 2. Same goes for the GTA-series.

Now that we're on the subject of co-op games, I can recommend trying "Synergy". It's similar mod to "Sven Co-op" only it's made for Half-Life 2 and it's episodes. I completed episode 1 and 2 yesterday with a friend and despite a few annoying bugs (only 1 passenger can use the car and the elevator in the underground chapter bugged out just as we were approaching the awesome G-man sequence in episode 2) it was an overall great experience. I haven't tried the complete Half-life 2 story mode yet but it should be working just fine. The mod was last updated in February this year.

http://synergymod.net/ for more information. The mod can be downloaded directly through steam.

After actually reading your post thoroughly I realized you were talking about the PSP-game "ChinaTown Wars" /facepalm. As for that I don't think I'm buying it. I've grown tired of using the PSP for many hours (which I feel is required to experience the story mode as it should be experienced) because my hands are too big for the PSP so I grow tired from playing it relatively fast :(
I'd prefer to stick with the console and PC versions whenever I can.

sweet 'n neat!
is it for free?
so, you expect to have 2 buggy's (not bugs) in the buggy scene/part and 2 loveboats (airboats) in the hl2 story?
maybe it's meant to be spawned by cheat to get it. (dunno)

Well i think i will get it.
if not right away, then when it's a bit cheaper.
it's always handy to have new game shit when you're far from home etc.
you don't have to complete the game asap, that's not where the psp is for (i guess)
but anyway, how come you got to forget about gta 'n stuff?
and about hl2, you're not going to buy ep3 when it comes out, and wait for hl3 instead???

Post subject:  Re: Mods & Plugins

I properly am. I'm just not a big fan of the periodic release of expansions to the game since Valve have miss interpreted how it works. It's supposed to bring games to us faster but in smaller bits in a steady flow instead of large games developed over long time. Instead we sit for ages waiting with a fresh memory of Alyx holding her now (possibly?) dead father in her arms! How cruel is that to us!? Bloody cliffhangers!

and for GTA... I don't know. it's just not the same anymore. I guess developers got a little too stuck up their own asses with shiny polygon effects rather than making a cool story and loads of extra stuff to do in the city( I'd blame the whiny GTA-community who just had to have a new gfx engine!). When I played GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas I spend hours doing all the small missions and extra stuff they added to the game after I had completed the story mode the 5th time because of its sheer awesomeness. When I got GTA IV I completed the story mode, said: "well, that was alright" and put the game back on the shelf. I dunno if it's just me but the GTA IV's story never really caught on to me. Maybe I just prefer the 80's and 90's era more since i played GTA:SA and GTA:VC so much; I don't know. GTA IV's soundtrack is boring and dull. Even the host of Liberty Rock Radio knows it (former host of "K-DST" in GTA:SA) which was the only radio channel i really liked except for the pumping techno channel for the fast past car chases.

I guess I'm just getting old! :P

you getting old?
already? :P

i know what you mean, and yes, i guess this has something to do with getting older, but not old.
as you refer to VC and SA, you where a yougher gamer back then, and your memory translates to your today's vision.
let me explain this.
here's a try:
old computer game emulators to run old games for users who had such old computer will use it, play it, and like it.
mostly the stuff/software/games they use to play.
but things they don't recall, like games or stuff like that(on the same emulator or computer, they won't play it for the first time, because it's such old game! and does not give the joy of our today's entertainment setting. the game is expired, and lost it's atraction.
if it doesn't have a "feelgood" bind, it's lost.
it's just all about the recognition of your memory recall of good times.

this is where my try ends, i hope you get my point.

well, your avatar shows another kind of person.
not quite like an old fart... yet. :P

edit:

oh actually is, what it means is, what i meant (the try of explanation:)
you try to refer back to your good times, the day's you had better experiances of games, movies and music (pherhaps).
like being better, more pure, and way more... i don't know, i can't explain, but there is something about being young.
and someting about getting older, you get more like frozen, like your feelings get more dull, the food tastes less etc.
all of that is not gone, but less in your/our experiances.
this is also the process which makes kids play with toys, and when they/we get older, we stop playing like that because of that same reason.

does this explanation suffice?

It's sadly true. Well, close to the truth anyway. All my good gaming experiences has been in the long, long ago and now I wander aimlessly around trying to relocate a similar experience. Last time I had a really good gaming experience was when I started playing WoW which is almost 4 years ago. Though I'm really looking forward to Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Valve hasn't let me down. Yet.

yes well maybe it has also got something to do with searching for a happy feeling from out of material things in this material world.
we shoud rather seek 'n persuit real luck and happyness out of the quality time value things from life, like find the love of your life, have kids and make a happy family, who knows.
but this is a sad thing if this is far from your home, or isn't one of your preffered choices.
it has also to do with the way we look at things.
our expectation bar raises every day, and it is hard to get to satisfy people of certain age with quality home entertainment.
that it's good, it doesn't mean you have to like it, or see, feel and hear it the way you would like to live it.
my expectations of HL2 where so much different from the result, i did like it, but something was bothering me.
i expected the same things from black mesa etc. this is what let my joy down while playing it.
but after completing the game, i had a feeling of playing it again, and that is very rare with the games i play.
i guess that's what make a game a masterpiece.
most games i'm glad to be done with them.

i hope this clears some clouds, and helps you out a bit.

you buy Ep3? but you told me you didn't like the episodic shit from valve, and wait for hl3 for in about 8-16 years...

I am buying it, I don't like how they're doing it, but I need to know how it all ends. Quitting now would be pointless.
I would have preferred if they had released a Half-life 3 instead of 3 episodes. What we're getting now is indeed "Half-life 3". Valve said they're doing this because of the time it takes to develop the game. Half-life 3 would be released by the time they'd all retired. Also, Half-Life is the kind of game who has "raised the bar" many, many times. Every time they've released anything our expectations have been sky-high and we gotten 3x of what we expected, at least that's how I experienced Half-life 2 and it's episodes. Just try to imagine the work pressure they must/could be working under if they actually gave thought to how their fans imagine the game to be and how perfect everything has to be to meet the fans expectations.

To many players (myself included) Half-Life is what sparked their interest in video games. Sure, we've played other video games before, but this was the boot-kick that really got us going with video games. Which makes it really personal to a lot of people. It's not just a game Valve can toy around with and do as they please.

I got no doubt in my mind that they won't let us down, I'm just trying to illustrate how it is. To use an extreme metaphor: it's like a newborn child so pure and nice which we don't wanna see corrupted by age and bad influence.

So yes, you are indeed right. Games can be a really personal matter all depending on the person playing it.

all i can say is, when i played Halflife the first time, i knew that was the kind of game with it's simple but versatile gameplay and interacting features, it was simply a landmark, something to refer from, the game of games, a king was born.
and indeed, it's up to the creators to keep it that way, and think things over before they make any dicission about every aspect of the game in development.
thei're very gifted and tallented, i wonder if they can keep it with the release of hl3.
it can't grow beyond certain limits i guess, time will tell.
